The change of seasons is a great time to remember your annual home maintenance checklist. Here are a few items to take note of to protect your home as fall slowly fades into winter.
Check the driveway and sidewalk
Do a thorough visual inspection of your driveway, sidewalk, steps, and porches, to ensure that there are no large cracks, and no existing problems which might be exacerbated by cooler weather. This should also include checking railings – and looking out for washed out materials alongside your walkway or driveway that could indicate gradual disintegration.
Check your heating system
Check your furnace or heat pump to make sure it is ready for cooler weather when it arrives. If you don’t feel comfortable with doing this yourself, engage the services of a professional. At the least, start it up on a chilly day to make sure it works properly – and isn’t left to you should fire it up and listen for abnormal sounds, and ensure that it seems to be generating heat properly.
Check the humidifier (or de-humidifier)
Maintaining a healthy balance of humidity indoors is the key to respiratory health. Heating and cooling systems alike can contribute to excessively high or low humidity, leading to increased allergy symptoms and other respiratory ailments.
Clear out gutters
Fall is a great time to check that your gutters are clear and free of debris, which tends to accumulate during the year. When it is functioning well, the gutter drainage system redirects thousands of gallons of water away from your rooftop to prevent water damage and necessitate roof repair. If you live in an area where clogging is a problem, you may even want to install mesh over the gutters to prevent debris buildup.
Inspect your roof
Like the gutter systems, it is a good idea to inspect the roof thoroughly during the fall. You can either use binoculars for this, or, with proper safety equipment and training, get a closer look right at roof level. Check for missing or cracked shingles, damage to flashing around vents and chimneys, and perform a good visual inspection, looking for anything loose or damaged.
